Percy Harris Nancy Harris Rodney Harris Roger Barrett RR 2 Box 1 920 New Sharon ME 04955 Police proud of their record armington boasts impressive stats By BETTY JESPERSEN Stall Writer ARMINGTON armington police are on the street keeping a lid on an ever growing number of assaults thefts and traffic violations according to a report released Thursday by Police Chief John Rogers I feel 1996 was a very good year with a number of major accom plishments" Rogers said Thursday very Of the 374 major crimes reported including 48 burglaries four rapes75 assaults 88 drug cases and 16 motor vehicle thefts 169 or 45 per cent were cleared by arrests or other means is a very good rate" he said The department was short two employees due to a retirement and disability but the remaining officers responded to a 2 percent increase in traffic accidents a 35 percent increase in traffic warnings and gave out 23 percent more parking tickets Another accomplishment in 1996 was that 45 percent or $90000 of the $200000 in stolen property was recov ered through investigations the chief said In 1994 only 24 percent or $29000 was recovered according to department statistics prepared by dispatcher Kathy Haines Traffic accidents in 1996 soared to 625 an average of two a day 98 occurring directly on Wilton Road and even more at adjacent intersec tions and in parking lots Assaults and fights increased by 24 percent largely due to more fights at ield Goals Lounge and at the all night Big Stop on Wilton Road Rogers said bar patrons often wander down the road to where trouble develops between intoxicated patrons Within the department Rogers said the hiring of two new rookie offi cers through an intensive selection process was an important step Patrolman Michael Wahl Jr is cur rently undergoing a three month training session at the Criminal Justice Academy Patrolman Shane Cote will attend the program in April Also in 1996 the department started a formal ield Training Officers Program for all reserve and new full time officers under the supervision of academy certified field training offi cers Sgt Peter Barton and Patrolman Irving Dorr Dorr is also in his third year of teaching the'DARE program at the Cascade Brook School Other department accomplish ments include an increase of 1OQO hours to 1400 hours for in ser vice training with full time officers averaging 875 hours and part timers 35 hours In 1995 1300 training hours were logged Also Barton and Sgt Jack Peck were promoted and now supervise the night shift Lt Richard Caton was reassigned to criminal investigations Patrolman Mark Cayer works with two neighborhood watch programs Patrolman Joyce Richard investi gates sex abuse cases and Patrolman Vernon Stevens covers drug cases using the certified drug 9 dog In addition about $20000 in grants was awarded to the department for programs to enforce operating under the influence laws buying two in car video cameras offering community bike safety programs and purchasing computer software Some highlights of complaints in 1996 include domestic disturbances down 13 percent drug cases down 24 percent burglaries down 67 per cent OUI arrests down 1735 per cent and harassment calls down 12 percent SBfr 'A 4 V4 Ma 51 A Is 1 Staff photoJOE PHELAN End of the chain: An overturned Chevrolet pickup lies in a ditch oh Route 202 In Manchester about 3 pm Thursday The truck operated by Horace Coskery of Augusta was the last vehicle in a chain reaction panic stop when a school bus hit its yellow lights Coskery headed for the ditch in order to avoid hitting the vehicle stopped in front of him and flipped and turned around as it went into the ditch Coskery was treated by Augusta rescue personnel and was not taken to the hospital Central Maine Newspapers announces staffing changed Warren Watson executive editor of the Centra!
